Pittacum is a modern winery created in 1999, when the Bierzo region was emerging as one of the new promises of Spanish wine. It is located in the picturesque village of Arganza, with a long wine tradition, and its greatest treasure is the old vineyards of the Mencía variety (between 50 and 80 years old) grown without the use of any chemical or synthetic product, only with organic fertilizers. The winery has 12 hectares of its own and monitors 250 plots of handpicked partners located in different areas of the region. Each plot has its own identity, due to the very particular microclimate. Bierzo is a region formed by a set of small valleys and with a large flat depression, which results in conditions of soil, climate, slopes, altitudes and very diverse exposures.

Pittacum favored vineyards on hillsides, with deep and well-drained soils, composed of sand, clay and shale, and with moderate fertility. Each plot is vinified separately, composing an impeccable final blend. During the harvest, the grape bunches already undergo a first selection and those that arrive at the winery are selected again. This ensures that only the best berries, only the healthiest ones, are fermented.

The winery's name refers to a 37-liter amphora from Roman times and its trademark is the authentic reds from Mencía with maturation in French oak. Pittacum Áurea, the top of the range of the producer, is a unique vineyard red, made with grapes from the Areixola vineyard, over 70 years old. Pittacum also originates from old vines and was indicated by Luis Gutierrez, a collaborator with Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, as a “good buy”. For the Spanish critic, this winery produces clean, modern and harmonious wines that express the unique character of the region.

Since 2002, Bodegas Pittacum belongs to the Terras Gauda Group, which also owns Bodegas Terras Gauda (Rías Baixas) and Quinta Sardonia (Castilla y León).
