The name Robustus pays homage to the first Douro wine, produced by Dirk Niepoort, Robustus 1990, and which was never commercialized. Since 2004, Robustus has been vinified according to the methods used in the production of traditional wines. The long aging in old wood casks, prints maturity, complexity, softens the tannins and gives the wine precision and balance, without losing all its vigor and aromatic freshness. Robustus comes from our oldest vines, facing north, where the acidity and tannic structure are high. In an extremely hot region, with the diversity of terroirs and the wisdom of the old vine, it is possible to produce fresh and long-guarded wines.

VINIFICATION
The climatic conditions of the viticultural year 2015 were very favorable, with sun, heat and little humidity, allowing homogeneous vegetative growth.

The winter, with rain starting in March, restored a large part of the water reserves in the soil. In the beginning of spring, average temperatures were high and some rain completed the water replacement, allowing a balanced sprouting. After flowering in May, the painter started in July, quite homogeneous, about two weeks earlier than the previous year.

One of the particularities of this wine year was the ability of the vine to remain hydrated during ripening. In late August, early September, the basal leaves remained green and moist, with the berries hydrated and a thick, firm film. The balance of musts, the smoothness of tannins and the intense concentration of color indicate that we are facing an exceptional year for Doc Douro wines.

The grapes for Robustus were selected manually at the entrance to the cellar, falling by gravity into a stainless steel vat. Alcoholic fermentation and maceration time were long. Aging in 2000 liter barrels lasted more than 4 years. Of this wine, 5200 bottles were bottled in February 2020, without gluing or filtration.

TEST RESULTS
Robustus 2015 is a wine of mature character. After a prolonged stage in 2000L foudres he develops somewhat earthy tertiary aromas with an emphasis on the peat aroma.

The tannins are seductive, but perfectly balanced, with great structure, which only old vines can transmit.

In the mouth it impresses with its youth, lightness and tension, very fine with a long and persistent finish.

Win with decanting!
